2022 Ford F-650 Supercab dump truck

We serve drivers from all over the midwest and beyond, but can you buy a truck out of state? A lot of drivers worry about things like taxes, fees, and registration when buying a truck out of state, on top of the typical stresses of the buying process. As it turns out, buying a towing or commercial truck out of state is actually very straightforward—especially if you come to Lynch Truck Center. Find out how to buy a truck in another state by reading on.

Registering a Truck Bought in Another State

You may be wondering about the registration process for a truck bought out of state. It’s relatively straightforward, and involves compiling some documents and taking a trip to the DMV. Here are the details:

  1. Beforehand, make sure you ask for a bill of sale with the purchase price of the truck on it. From there, look up your local DMV using a resource like DMV Near Me.
  2. When you go to the DMV, bring the following items and documents:
    1. Bill of sale
    2. Completed application for vehicle transaction form
    3. Title of the vehicle signed by the previous owner
    4. Lienholders’ names and address
    5. Filled out odometer disclosure state for title transfer
    6. Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
    7. Registration Fees
    8. Proof of insurance
    9. Proof of residency

When you’re at the DMV, be sure to let the clerk know that the truck was purchased out of state, with the intent of registering it at your address. From there, the clerk will probably give the bill of sale back to you but keep the title. Your new title should arrive in the mailbox. You’ll also be asked to pay the difference in state sales tax between the purchase state and the current state.

Taxes and Fees on Out-of-State trucks

There are a few important payments you’ll have to make outside of the purchase price of your new truck. There’s local sales tax, the difference in state taxes (see above), and any processing fees from the DMV. However, you should find that the process is similar to registering a truck you bought in your home state. That means you can always visit one of our dealerships near Northern Chicago or Milwaukee, even if you’re coming from across state lines.
