Comprehensive Insurance vs. Collision Insurance

Couple looking at touchpad

If you’re considering your insurance options for a new or pre-owned truck, you’re probably wondering, “What is comprehensive insurance vs. collision?” In simplest terms, collision insurance covers damages to your car in the event of an accident, while comprehensive insurance protects you if your car is damaged by theft, vandalism, natural disasters, or a falling object/s. Both are incredibly important forms of coverage (but optional), especially if you spend a lot of time on Northern Chicago roads traveling between jobs. Learn more about comprehensive vs. collision below!

Auto Insurance: Comprehensive vs. Collision

Comprehensive insurance and collision insurance both fall under the umbrella of physical damage coverage. Again, they’re both optional forms of coverage, and aren’t the same as liability insurance, which is legally required in almost every U.S. state, including Wisconsin and Illinois. Below, you’ll find some examples of what’s covered under comprehensive and collision insurance plans.

Comprehensive Insurance

  • What IS Covered:
    • A collision with an animal
    • A falling tree
    • A natural disaster
    • Theft
    • Vandalism

Collision Insurance

  • What IS Covered:
    • A collision with another vehicle
    • A rollover
    • Damage caused by poor road conditions, such as large potholes
    • Damage caused by hitting a stationary object, such as a tree

Comprehensive vs. Collision: Which is Right for You?

For greater peace of mind on Racine roadways, it’s a good idea to supplement required liability insurance with collision and comprehensive. Every driver is different, however, and this may not be possible or a necessity for you. Think about the following points to help you make a decision:

  • What is Your Financial Situation? Would you be able to pay out-of-pocket if you got into an accident tomorrow or if your car was stolen? If not, consider one or both of these coverages.
  • How Much Do You Drive? Do you spend a lot of time on Racine roads? The longer you’re on the road, the higher the risk of being involved in an accident.
  • What Are the Roads & Climate Like? Are the roads you travel poorly maintained? Do you travel through wooded areas where deer are frequently seen on the roads?
  • What’s Your Car’s Value? How’s the condition of your truck? If it still has much of its original value, it’ll likely be more expensive to fix.

If any of the above questions are a cause for concern, it’s probably worthwhile to at least discuss your options with your current insurance company, or with Lynch Truck Center when you finance a car. Note that most commercial auto insurance policies include both collision and comprehensive coverage.
